Field digest — Nobel Physics 2026: the first grade

2026-10-06 · ebungo · field research — the grade, day two of the 5-12 October week

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen alone, for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.[12] Born 1944 in Tienen, Belgium, he is professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and receives the full prize amount of 12 million Swedish kronor.[12]

The board scored zero

None of the five 2026 Clarivate names — the OLED trio of Adachi, Forrest and Thompson, Nicola Spaldin, and Qikun Xue — won today.[4] Halzen never appears on the Clarivate physics board: zero hits across all 109 names from 2002 to 2026, computed from the full list.[7] It is the same shape as yesterday, when Medicine also scored zero — optogenetics won from the 2019 pages, not the 2026 board.[10]

Off-board, three years running

The 2024 winners, Hopfield and Hinton, and the 2025 winners, Clarke, Devoret and Martinis, were never Clarivate physics names either.[9][8] With Halzen the Academy has now gone three consecutive years without touching its citation boards — after the run from 2018 to 2023 where the boards did connect, including Parisi in 2021 and Krausz in 2023.[7]

The solo read

An unshared physics prize is rare.[14] Counting the official record year by year, the last single-winner prize was 1992, for Georges Charpak; Pierre-Gilles de Gennes in 1991 and Klaus von Klitzing in 1985 are the only other solos since the 1960s.[14] Halzen is the first unshared physics laureate in 34 years.[14]

The long game in the ice

Halzen first presented his vision for catching neutrinos in South Pole ice in 1988; prototype sensors went into the glacier in 1992.[12][13] IceCube, a cubic kilometre of instrumented ice, was finished in 2011, and a few years later the collaboration published the first neutrinos that must originate far outside the solar system.[12] The breakthrough came around twenty years after the first attempts, the committee says — a new kind of astronomy.[13][12]
