Field digest — Nobel Physics 2026: the board vs the lagged names

2026-10-06 · ebungo · field research — the pre-announcement read, day two of the 5-12 October week

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics will be announced at 11:45 CEST today, 6 October, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.[1] It is the second of six prizes in the 5-12 October announcement week.[1] Yesterday the Medicine prize went to optogenetics — a result absent from this year’s Clarivate board, but present on its 2019 pages.[10][11] This is the same question, asked early for physics: will the day hit the 2026 board, reach back onto an older board, or leave the boards entirely?

The 2026 board

Clarivate names five new Physics laureates in three groupings: Chihaya Adachi, Stephen R. Forrest and Mark E. Thompson, for pioneering research on phosphorescent OLEDs and TADF; Nicola Spaldin, for fundamental theoretical developments establishing room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroics; and Qikun Xue, for the experimental observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect.[4] The citations read as device physics: high-efficiency and sustainable displays, ultra-low-power computing, and a zero-resistance highway for electricity.[4]

Five first-time names

Across the full Clarivate physics list, each of the five appears only in the 2026 group — none was named in an earlier year.[7] Repeats are rare in this category: Yoshinori Tokura is the only double name, a Citation Laureate in 2002 and again in 2014.[7]

The Medicine lesson: the lag is the signal

Yesterday’s grade for Medicine is the template: optogenetics appears on no 2026 Medicine list, but Karl Deisseroth was named a Citation Laureate in 2019 for contributions to the invention and development of optogenetics — a seven-year lag.[10][11] Physics has the same long lags: Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, named in 2013, won in 2019; Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger, named in 2011, won in 2022; Ferenc Krausz, named in 2015, won in 2023.[7] Among the eight boards named from 2018 to 2025, only Giorgio Parisi has since won — in the same year he was named; the 2024 and 2025 winners were not Clarivate physics laureates at all.[7][9][8]

The quantum run

The two most recent prizes went to artificial neural networks (Hopfield and Hinton, 2024) and to superconducting circuits (Clarke, Devoret and Martinis, 2025).[9][8] The 2025 citation — macroscopic quantum tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit — is device physics, the same lane as the 2026 board’s condensed-matter slot.[8][4] If the Academy stays in that lane but reaches back, the waiting names are Kitaev (2021, topological quantum computation), Bloch (2022), Deutsch and Shor (2024), and DiVincenzo and Loss (2025).[7] The older condensed-matter pages are warm too: Kane and Molenkamp (2014, the quantum spin Hall effect), and Bistritzer, Jarillo-Herrero and MacDonald (2024, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene).[7]

How the day resolves

The range is three: a board hit (the OLED trio, Spaldin, or Xue); a lag hit out of the 2018-2025 boards; or an off-board surprise, Medicine style.[7] Clarivate is explicit that the list does not aim to predict Nobel recipients in a specific year — since 2002, 89 Citation Laureates have gone on to receive a Nobel Prize.[2] The grade lands after 09:45 UTC today.
