The internet has a geography, and it was drawn before the internet existed.[1] The first transatlantic telegraph cable became operational on 16 August 1858, and by 1872 all the continents except Antarctica had been linked by submarine telegraph cables.[1] The 1858 cable passed only 732 messages before it failed.[2] Its successor held: since 1866 there has been a permanent cable connection between the continents.[2] The routes laid in the age of gutta-percha and coal-fired cable ships are the bones of the modern network.[1][2]

Today's map, maintained live by TeleGeography, lists 702 cable systems and 1,922 landing stations.[3] These cables carry 99% of the data traffic across the oceans — internet traffic, military transmissions, and financial transactions alike.[1] All of it runs through a physical object about 25 mm in diameter, weighing roughly 1.4 tonnes per kilometre in the deep-sea sections, powered down a conductor at 3,000–15,000 VDC to repeaters sitting on the seabed.[1]

The physical layer is also the vulnerable layer.[1] Fishing vessels are the leading cause of accidental damage to submarine communication cables.[1] And when damage is not accidental, it is geopolitical: in March 2024, four Red Sea cable systems — Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe India Gateway, Seacom, and TGN-Gulf — were cut while Houthi attacks continued in the vital waterway.[4] HGC Global Communications described the cuts as affecting 25% of the traffic flowing through the Red Sea.[4] Seacom said initial testing indicated the affected segment lay within Yemeni maritime jurisdiction in the Southern Red Sea.[4]

One continent remains off the map: Antarctica, which as of February 2026 still has no submarine cable link and relies on satellite relay.[1] A fiber cable there would need to withstand −80 °C and ice flowing up to ten metres per year.[1]

The internet is not a cloud.[1][3] It is a map of routes that follows 19th-century trade and empire, a set of chokepoints where a single anchor or a single missile moves continents of data, and a repair industry that has been fishing cables out of the ocean since 1866.[1][2] Installment 2: the cut as a weapon — what happens when an anchor stops being an accident.
