September 2026 is a strange quiet season on the Moon: the humans who flew there in April are home, the landings that were promised for this year are slipping or cancelled, and the money that will buy the next wave was handed out in June. What the ledger shows is a program turning from voyages into logistics — same instruments on every lander, deliveries bought like cargo, and schedule risk treated as the one unforgivable sin.

1 · the flight — Artemis II, done and measured

On April 10, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen splashed down at 5:07 p.m. PDT off the coast of San Diego, completing a nearly 10-day journey that took them 252,756 miles from home at their farthest distance from Earth.[1] The crew flew 695,081 miles in total — farther than any humans have ever traveled, surpassing the distance record set by Apollo 13 astronauts in 1970.[1] The capsule the crew named Integrity survived a heatshield environment that had been re-engineered after unexpected Artemis I damage, and the first crewed lunar flight since 1972 returned to a "flawless" splashdown.[8]

What astronauts did not do: land. That was never Artemis II's job — but the original sequence had the next flight doing it, and the current one does not.[2][8]

2 · the redesign — landing moves to 2028

Artemis III, now scheduled for 2027, is a new demonstration mission in low Earth orbit that will test one or both commercial landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin — rendezvous and docking practice, not a surface touchdown.[2][8] The first Artemis lunar landing is Artemis IV, which NASA continues to target for early 2028, a date unchanged since mid-2025: after reaching lunar orbit, the crew will transfer from Orion to a commercial lunar lander for their descent to the surface.[2] The British Broadcasting Corporation's reporting is blunt about the schedule: the landing is targeted for 2028, "though there are doubts that target is achievable."[8]

3 · the market — four deliveries, one payload trio

On June 30, NASA selected three companies to land four new missions on the Moon in late 2028 under the CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative, a backbone of its Moon Base Program: Astrobotic at $297.9 million for two deliveries, Firefly Aerospace at $144.2 million, and Intuitive Machines at $148.3 million.[3] NASA's deputy associate administrator for exploration frames the design principle directly: "By flying the same science instruments on multiple landers, we will better understand potential hazards during landing and build out a global network of environmental data and location markers on the Moon."[3]

Each delivery carries the same three payloads: SCALPSS, a four-camera stereo array imaging how a lander's exhaust plume erodes lunar dust; LRA, a laser retroreflector for orbit and navigation; and LETS, a spectrometer characterizing the radiation environment.[3] With 17 lunar surface deliveries across multiple providers, plus a polar rover (PROMISE) under consideration, the intent is a station network, not a flag collection.[3]

4 · the flight record — one full success, two tipped, one cancelled

The commercial scoreboard entering 2028's wave is brutal. Firefly Aerospace performed the first fully successful commercial Moon landing on March 2 (2025), completing more than 14 days of surface operations and transmitting 119 gigabytes of data, including 51 gigabytes of science and technology data — roughly one lunar day of work.[5][6] Intuitive Machines sent a water-hunting drill to the Moon in 2025, but the spacecraft tripped while attempting to land on the south pole's treacherous terrain and could not complete its mission objectives.[4]

Schedule risk, meanwhile, is now a contract-killer: NASA and Draper mutually terminated the CP-12 task order, valued at $73 million, after redesigns pushed the projected landing to 2030 or 2031 — "Future milestones were projected to take years to complete," the agency stated, with $43 million already paid for completed milestones.[7] The mission would have delivered the Farside Seismic Suite to Schrödinger Basin; NASA says it remains committed to those science objectives through future landings.[7]

5 · the other pole — Chang'e-7 waits

China's Chang'e-7, designed to scour the lunar south pole for water ice with a lander, rover, and a robotic "hopper" that would descend into shadowed craters to drill, will not launch in 2026: it "cannot take place during the planned window this year," per the China Manned Space Engineering Office.[4] The director of Thailand's NARIT, whose institute has instruments aboard, expects the mission next year, "potentially during one of two windows in spring or mid-summer."[4] The Moon's water-ice question is why both programs target the same pole — and it remains genuinely open: the presence of water ice in sufficient amounts to be useful "is not currently known," according to Brown University's James Head.[4] A University of Hong Kong lunar geologist reads the shift plainly: China's lunar program is "shifting from an exploration program to a resource utilization program."[4]

the shape of the ledger

Four facts carry the story. Humans are back in lunar space, but the return-to-the-surface date has slipped to a target nobody fully believes in.[1][2][8] The buying model treats landings as a delivery market, standardizing instruments so data from different sites is comparable.[3] The execution record is one clean success against two tipped landings and one cancelled order.[4][6][7] And the south pole's prize — water — is still unproven in useful quantities, with both nations racing to be first to drill it.[4] The quiet season is the market's period of assembly, and the assembly is not done.
