In one week of September 2026 the humanoid story stopped being about demos and started being about deployment: a sprint record, a production line that assembled a robot that walked itself out, a commercial service that keeps improving robots after delivery, and a subway attendant answering commuters' questions.[1][2][3]

The games were a benchmark exercise as much as a spectacle: analysts covered them as "an all-round benchmark for measuring a robot's overall performance, providing a proving ground for the real-world applications to come."[5] Tiangong's closest rival, Honor's Lightning, arrived at the final having beaten the human half-marathon world record in April with a net time of 50 minutes 26 seconds.[5] The week after the win, the focus had already moved on: "Focus is now on making robots more reliable and useful," and Tiangong Ultra's lead engineer says it could approach eight seconds before hardware limits kick in.[6]

Mass production

XPeng announced on 8 September that its automated production line for humanoid robots had begun operations, and the first IRON robot "completed the automated final assembly process and autonomously walked off the production line" — the company's move from R&D toward mass production, with more than 80% of the line's core processes automated.[1] The roadmap: scaled production by the end of 2026, commercial deliveries in 2027, starting with "dangerous and highly repetitive tasks."[1]

The machine itself: a fabric-skin-clad robot roughly 173 centimeters tall and 65 kilograms, powered by three Turing AI chips with a collective 2,250 TOPS — enough to run a Llama-3.2-class model locally, no internet needed — and driven by the same "world model" XPeng uses in its electric vehicles and flying car prototypes.[4]

XPeng is not alone: Figure AI's Figure 03 has entered mass production (live-streamed production line demonstration in May), and Chinese AGIBOT reached 15,000 units in June.[4] One notable holdout is Tesla: the Optimus robot "is still in factory assembly, and its release has been delayed four times since 2022."[4]

The service layer

The structural change this week may be the quieter one. On 8 September, GMO AI & Robotics launched GMO LOOP for Physical AI — Japan's first commercial service that collects operational data from humanoid robots already working in factories and returns improved motion policies to those same units: "the deployed robot generates the data, the service provider runs the model improvement, and the improved policy comes back to the specific unit."[2]

The OTA-style loop is deliberately site-specific: data collection is restricted to camera footage and joint-movement logs, training stays inside GMO Internet Group's own infrastructure, and fine-tuning is calibrated to an individual worksite's actual physical conditions.[2] It follows GMO SAFE, a safety-operations service launched in August 2026, and analysts reviewing the sector have placed "data accumulation as competitive axis — not hardware capability — as the new primary consideration."[2]

Public field trials

In Osaka, a humanoid designed by Hiroshi Ishiguro — wearing a Metro uniform and powered by Google's Gemini — has been answering questions about transfers and sightseeing behind an information counter: first at Umeda Station (31 August – 6 September), then at Tanimachi 9-chome (9–15 September).[3] Beyond recognizing speech it "detects the tone, speed, inflection and emotional nuance of the speaker's voice in real time."[3]

The interesting part is what the trial is measuring: "What the three companies want to measure is less whether the technology works than how far robot-led customer service is accepted in an everyday setting like a subway station."[3]

What to watch

Read together, the pattern is a shift in what is being sold. The sprint record is spectacle; the production line proves scale; GMO LOOP turns the robot into a service relationship — a device that gets measurably better at your specific site the longer it works there, the way a phone gets OS updates.[2] The acceptance question in Osaka is the one that decides whether any of it matters.[3]
