Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones — the Wall Street Journal's summary this week describes disruption reaching "not just drivers but also aviation, maritime operations, and critical infrastructure."[9] This digest maps the invisible war over the signal that tells every ship, plane and phone where it is: how big the interference has become, who is doing it, what it costs, and what the backup might look like.

1 · The scale

The reference dataset comes from aviation. OPSGROUP's GPS Spoofing Workgroup — 950 pilots, safety managers, airline and ATC representatives — published its final report in September 2024: "This year, a 500% increase in spoofing has been observed. On average 1500 flights per day are now spoofed, versus 300 in Q1/Q2 of 2024."[2] FlySafe's 2024–2026 synthesis of the same reporting puts it as "a five-fold increase inside one calendar year," and says the curve has not reversed: national civil-aviation authorities in the Baltic states report continued growth through early 2026.[1] The workgroup's survey of nearly 2,000 flight crew found "a full 1,400 crew members (~70%) rated their concern relating to GPS Spoofing impact on flight safety as very high or extreme."[2]

The Baltic numbers are concrete.

Sweden's Transport Agency recorded "733 incidents so far in 2025, up from 55 across the whole of 2023" — an almost daily occurrence — and airlines operating in the region have reported "tens of thousands of GPS jamming incidents in the past few years."[4]

FlySafe's synthesis adds that an estimated 85% of flights in Estonia were affected by GPS interference in 2025, and Lithuania logged interference 22× higher in June 2025 than June 2024.[1]

The 2024 origin story is Finnair suspending daily flights to Tartu for a month after two aircraft had to return to Helsinki — Tartu's airport "relies solely on GPS."[5]

EASA already clocked "several thousand incidents" per year in 2024.[5]

2 · The seas

Ships are the other big victim — and the stakes are physical.

Wikipedia notes "80% of global trade is moved through shipping companies, relying upon GNSS systems for navigation."[7]

A BBC investigation in March 2026 found the Strait of Hormuz full of ghosts: "Hundreds and hundreds of ships. But they're all in the wrong place," with one analyst counting "35 different clusters" of vessels bunched in "tight, unnaturally perfect circles" or hovering over land — their GPS coordinates disrupted, obfuscating true location.[3]

The interference hits Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), the collision-avoidance broadcast: "Jamming in the Gulf has interfered with the system used by ships to avoid collision," and the danger is that "it's not knowing where everybody else is going," as University of Surrey's Alan Woodward put it — a 300m tanker takes a long time to turn.[3]

Analysts strongly suspect Iran; the signals are "very weak and therefore easy to jam," and military users can fall back on encrypted M-Code, civilians cannot.[3]

3 · How we know

The map of all this comes from the planes themselves.

GPSJAM, the public interference map, "uses aircraft data to identify likely GPS interference based on reports of navigation-system accuracy" — jamming shows up as aircraft whose onboard systems report bad positions.[8]

The site's data feed switched sources exactly today, September 1: "Maps through August 31, 2026 use data provided by ADS-B Exchange; maps beginning September 1, 2026 use data provided by airplanes.live."[8]

This is why the hot zones are so well documented: Eurocontrol outlined two major jamming hotspots — from Eastern Turkish airspace to Iraq, Iran and Armenia, and from Southern Cypriot airspace towards Egypt, Lebanon and Israel — and the BBC's 2024 reporting traced Baltic sources towards St Petersburg, Kaliningrad and Pskov.[6][5]

4 · The legal frame

The law is clear and unenforced. "Under ITU rules, countries are obliged to eliminate harmful interference from GPS jamming and GPS spoofing, but the ITU lacks effective enforcement measures," and in the United States "the operation, marketing, or sale of any GPS jamming equipment is prohibited under federal law."[6] Spoofing — broadcasting fake signals that move a receiver to a false position — is "a more sophisticated and deceptive practice than GNSS jamming, which merely blocks affected devices."[7]

5 · The backup question

The debate repeats the cable one from this site's physical-internet series: single points of failure need physical backups. OPSGROUP's report warns that "over-reliance on GPS for primary navigation places great importance on preserving a sufficient network of conventional ground-based navaids."[2] The Resilient Navigation and Timing Foundation quotes the US DOT's own line: "We need signals from space, terrestrial broadcast, and fiber."[10] Industry is responding — Raytheon UK's Landshield anti-jam antenna, Advanced Navigation's inertial/image/star-matching systems — and the Royal Institute of Navigation's Ramsey Faragher predicts the era of open GNSS signals will look reckless in hindsight: "Soon, we will look back on this era where we are using open GNSS signals and think, 'God, we were mad, that was really not a smart move.'"[3]

Honest note
