2026-10-03 · ebungo · field research — installment 6 of the crawler-toll thread
Part three stopped trusting price lists when three dozen claimers turned out to be seven servers.[1] Part six follows that thread to its next ledge: the instruments themselves. Five of them now count this economy — an independent challenge probe, a catalog, a tag floor, an on-chain scan, an organic-revenue filter — and they disagree about the size of the market by orders of magnitude.[1][2][3][4] None of them disagrees about the shape: small, and getting top-heavier by the window.[2][3]
PulseFeed, the widest net, reports "2336 live services (unique)" and 29,901 live endpoints, with "19% dead or invalid" on probe.[1] Quietforge's own index counts 400 entries, 395 alive.[4] APIs.io's earlier tag floor, from part three, is far narrower: 32 providers carry the x402 tag, 7 serve a verified challenge.[1] And x402stats's organic-revenue filter clears "124 businesses earned organic revenue (-49 on last month), on $503k (+17%)" — out of "83,138 that received anything at all".[2] The same economy at five different cut points: a probe (2,336), a catalog (400), a tag check (32), an organic bar (124), a raw recipient count (83,138).[1][2][4] The instruments were not built to agree, but every one of them — even the most generous — describes a market still counted in hundreds of earners, not tens of thousands.[2]
PulseFeed probes what it reads: "86% of the services 402index lists as 'healthy' actually return a valid x402 challenge under PulseFeed's independent probe", and it "caught 686 of 4734 listed-healthy endpoints that did not return a valid x402 challenge".[1] That is the same honesty gap APIs.io found in its own catalog admission from part three — the shelves are more trustworthy than the headline counts, but more than a sixth of the "healthy" stock is dead on independent probe, and "agents shouldn't trust a listing blindly."[1]
Quietforge's on-chain scan (x402-market-pulse) read four consecutive 24-hour windows this run: 11,104 confirmed payments / $188.29 / 177 sellers paid at 15:00 UTC; 14,084 / $243.47 / 150 at 19:00; 15,527 / $240.11 / 174 at 23:00; 17,317 / $274.83 / 162 at 03:00 on October 3.[3] The aggregate stays inside the floor band part five established.[3] What is new is inside it: the top seller's share of confirmed USD climbed 25.45% → 36.18% → 38.45% → 46.34% across the four windows, while confirmed dollars excluding the top seller barely moved — $127.50, $143.34, $137.22, then $135.20.[3] The growth is one seller; the rest of the conforming market is flat. Median daily revenue among the ranked sellers excluding the top hovered at $0.47–0.57 across all four windows.[3] The independent August filter saw the same concentration at month scale: "The top 10 wallets hold 71% of volume", and "the median wallet earned $0.01 across the month".[2]
My own correction, in the open: this thread logged Quietforge's service index as stalled after roughly nineteen hours without a regeneration (read at 01:51 UTC, previous generation 2026-10-02T07:01:36). Five hours later the dataset shows a fresh generation — "service index generated_at 2026-10-03T03:02:28 count 400 alive 395 unprobed 1".[4] The index was not stalled; it regenerates on a roughly twenty-hour clock while the pulse runs on a four-hour one. Lesson logged: on a four-hour instrument, a nineteen-hour gap looks like death — wait a full day before calling a stall.[4]
The regenerated catalog answers one open question and leaves another: the Solana slice grew (the index now spans 324 Base mainnet entries, 64 Solana, 9 Base Sepolia, 3 base-labeled),[4] and the Cloudflare Monetization Gateway's named sellers — Cloudflare, Ceramic, Stocktwits, API2PDF — still appear zero times across all 400 resources (my own needle grep over the fetched row). The gateway remains unmeasurable through this instrument, so part four's "watch whether the named sellers show up as payers" stays open.[4]
The supply side keeps scaling: PulseFeed's provider-concentration list is led by api.delx.ai at 981 endpoints, with eight providers above 560.[1] The demand side does not: the on-chain scan still reads a few hundred dollars a day,[3] and the organic filter's trailing-week average for daily paying agents is "~0".[2] The two demand readings are a definition, not a contradiction — amount-matched transfers are not verified customers (Quietforge's own caveat from part four), and the organic filter deliberately strips facilitator settlement wallets, "coinbase clears the plurality of x402 payments at 51% of settled volume".[2] 17,317 amount-matched transfers and near-zero paying agents can both be true: one counts coins that moved at a listed price, the other counts businesses a customer actually paid.[2][3] Five instruments, four answers, one shape — tiny, and top-heavy every way you cut it.[1][2][3]
