Field digest — the internet's Antarctic gap

Antarctica is the only continent without a fiber-optic connection.[7] Every byte of its internet arrives by satellite or by physical transport — and the week after Chile's feasibility study came back positive, the data is still leaving the continent in suitcases.[9] This digest maps the gap: how the last cable-free continent gets online, why a cable is finally on the table, and the politics that will decide whether it ever gets built.

1 · The gap

The internet's user count on the continent is 2,700 (2021) — a small village's worth.[1] The network that serves them has no undersea cables at all: "all intercontinental communication is accomplished by terrestrial or satellite radio, or physical delivery."[1] The largest single link is the science pipe at the South Pole: NASA's TDRS relay (SPTR) has returned data at 50 Mbit/s since the 2007-2008 season, over 90% of the South Pole's entire data capability, used primarily for scientific data return.[1] McMurdo Station — the US hub with over 1,000 summer residents — has permanent access to a shared 17 Mbps connection.[1][2] The three Australian stations each get a 9 Mbps symmetric satellite link from Speedcast.[1] This is the internet the world's most data-hungry scientific continent runs on.

2 · The satellite era

Before 1992, Scott Base ran on high-frequency radio and letters; that year a satellite earth station at nearby Arrival Heights gave it its first data connection.[3] The modern era arrived with Starlink. In September 2022 the NSF began testing a terminal at McMurdo Station — The Verge reported that "NSF says the increased bandwidth will help scientists working on the remote continent near the South Pole", and that the old connection was "rough, to say the least", with "once-weekly Skype or FaceTime sessions at a public kiosk" the norm.[2] SpaceX credited its laser mesh — "Starlink's space laser network" — for reaching the seventh continent.[2] In December 2022 the COLDEX team at Allan Hills became the first Antarctic field camp to try it, livestreaming ice-core research from a camp where "Antarctica isn't on Starlink's service map just yet" — but it worked anyway, in winds past 30 knots.[4] In March 2023 the same system went in at Scott Base; Antarctica New Zealand said it could improve connection speed "by about a factor of ten" — and that the crew of 17 voted mealtimes a phone-free zone within weeks of screen culture arriving.[3]

3 · The data still leaves physically

Satellites raised the ceiling; they did not end the cargo. Antarctic research data "still leaves the continent physically, on hard drives ferried out by ship and plane 'in suitcases full of hard drives'," said Juan Pablo, a team leader in the Chilean pre-feasibility study.[9] ISRO's case shows why: India's two Antarctic ground stations, Maitri and Bharati, downlink every polar-orbit pass in real time — 14 to 15 orbits a day — because the Shadnagar ground station in Telangana can only acquire remote-sensing data four times a day.[8] AGEOS, the receiving station at Bharati, has been commissioned since August 2013, receiving IRS data and transferring it to India.[8] The NASA-ISRO NISAR mission was expected to produce data "that could even exceed 80 terabytes a day" — and India's answer to the transfer bottleneck was a ₹110-crore Ka-band satellite link (bids opened May 2023).[8] The continent hosts more than 90 active research stations from 54 countries, with at least a thousand researchers present at any time.[8] All of them share one bottleneck: the only fiber on the continent is inside the stations themselves.

4 · Two cables on the table

The cable era opened in December 2024, when the NSF published a call for information on an "Antarctic SMART Cable" — a subsea line from McMurdo Station to New Zealand or Australia, with the New Zealand route favored as 1,500 km shorter and cheaper.[5] The cable would carry "additional point sensors and/or distributed sensing infrastructure, enabling for the first time myriad investigations across a broad range of scientific disciplines."[5] Scientists judged the risk of ice scour disrupting the route relatively low; the consultation ran until January 15, 2025.[5] A month later, in January 2025, Chile's Undersecretariat of Telecommunications — with the Magallanes regional government and CAF, the Latin American development bank — launched a second study, budget $2.2 million, run by Pioneer Consulting and Salience Consulting over up to 16 months, to connect "Chile and the bases in Antarctica."[6]

Then, last week: the Chilean study concluded the Drake Passage crossing is technically viable.[9] The recommendation is an instrumented cable carrying a dedicated fiber pair to each Antarctic landing, naming two Chinese firms among the six suppliers canvassed by the regulator Subtel, with CAF financing and "partial support from the China-initiated MCDF Finance Facility."[9] A parallel route, per MarineLink, runs from Chile to King George Island — the region with the highest density of research stations — developed with funding from the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Financing and CAF.[7]

5 · The politics of the last cable

Every sensor on every proposed cable is a second story. MarineLink's April 2026 analysis notes the sensors could "monitor shipping and subsea vehicle activity" and would enable "tracking of naval vessels that do not need to disclose their position through AIS" — uses "that could be perceived as militarization and therefore contrary to the unique governance of Antarctica," whose Article 1 states the continent "shall be used for peaceful purposes only."[7] The same analysis warns the NSF plan has seen "no update on the project under the current administration, and research funding has been cut to the Foundation, perhaps casting the plan in doubt."[7] The commercial case is thin: SDxCentral's December 2024 read was that "Antarctica is likely to remain a cable-free zone, with no obvious economic benefit to developing long-distance connections through the region."[5] The gap, then, is not technical — it is a treaty, a budget, and five thousand kilometres of the world's roughest sea.

Honest note: the finalized Chilean study's full document is not yet public; the only accessible summary of its conclusions is the Tom's Hardware report (via MSN), whose full text is paywalled — I read and cite its opening. The NSF project's status after the January 2025 consultation deadline is unconfirmed by any source I could fetch; MarineLink's April 2026 "no update" is the most recent word. Where sources disagree or a question is unanswered, I flag rather than smooth.
