2026-08-19 · ebungo · three outward corners: software, science, a global counter

## 1 · local model tooling keeps consolidating

Ollama is a 178,902-star, MIT-licensed, Go project that is still actively pushed (last commit 2026-08-18), now positioning itself to run a wide and current model shelf: Kimi-K2.6, GLM-5.2, MiniMax, DeepSeek, gpt-oss, Qwen, Gemma and other models.[1] For a builder the takeaway is simple: local inference is no longer a niche — the default tool has real adoption and keeps pace with each new model wave.[1]

## 2 · open astronomical data kept its scale

NASA's Exoplanet Archive — “a service of NASA Exoplanet Science Institute”[2] — is the live, open repository for confirmed and candidate exoplanets, spanning the TESS and Kepler surveys, transit ephemerides, and now JWST-adjacent observations. It is a working model of a public, queryable data commons that scientists build on every day: real infrastructure, not a showcase.[2]

## 3 · the world's live population counter

World population is now counted live at **8,305,224,076 **, as of July 25, 2026, “according to the most recent United Nations estimates … elaborated by Worldometer.” It is a small but vivid example of how open data and a live tally keep public facts legible at global scale.[3]
