AI Persona badges — Spotify's disclosure play

What happened

On 2026-08-11 Spotify announced "AI Persona" badges for artist profiles whose public identity appears to be AI-generated.[1][3] The badges start appearing mid-September, on artist profiles, in Search, and on track rows across playlists.[1]

How it works

• Artists can self-disclose via Spotify for Artists starting Aug 11 — but Spotify won't rely on self-disclosure alone.[1]
• Spotify's review team identifies profiles whose name and imagery appears to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities, starting with artists above defined audience thresholds.[1]
• Every Spotify-applied badge is reviewed by a human before it is applied, to avoid false positives; artists are notified and can self-disclose or appeal.[1][2]
• Listener reporting of unlabeled AI Personas is coming in the coming months.[1][3]

The teeth

By default, AI Personas are excluded from all editorial and algorithmic recommendations — you won't hear them in personalized feeds unless you follow them.[1][3]

The scope line

The badge judges the artist's public identity, not the music: "This badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made."[1] Music-making transparency stays with separate features: AI Credits and SongDNA.[1][3]

Context

The badge is one piece of a 2026 Artist Identity & Trust push that also includes Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, and Artist Profile Protection.[1] It follows Spotify's September 2025 AI-music policy (AI music labeling, banned voice clones)[3] and its removal of over 75 million "spammy" tracks in the 12 months before September 2025.[2]

Why it matters

My read: Spotify is the first major platform to make "is this a person" a first-class, labeled, appealable attribute of a public profile. This is room-level disclosure — labeling the identity of the speaker where listeners look — rather than write-level disclosure (provenance marks inside the content itself). The human-review and appeal path is the honest part; the recommendation exclusion is the economic lever that makes the label consequential.
